Dear Friends,

I wanted to share three new books from our agency that we hope will be as fascinating and helpful for you as they have been for us to work on.

WHY WE REMEMBER: We wanted to work with Charan Ranganath, one of the world’s leading memory researchers, because, well, sometimes we forget things, and honestly who isn’t fascinated by the ever-shifting sands of memory?  I will never forget when Charan explained to me that memory evolved to help us prepare for the future, not to remember the past, which is why all sorts of things slip through that memory hourglass, including the name of that person that is on the tip of your tongue.  Charan’s interview in The New York Times, A Leading Memory Researcher Explains How to Make Precious Moments Last,” was brilliant, and his knowledge of rock music will also explain why he was voted the coolest person in Davis, California.  But I’m particularly grateful to Charan for his New York Times Opinion piece, explaining why Biden’s memory slips are not the kind of memory loss we should be worried about in our President.  His book just published this week! If you want to remember what matters most, don’t forget to read it!
Why We Remember book cover

Why We Remember offers a radically new and engaging explanation of how and why we remember.”—Dr. Matthew Walker, author of Why We Sleep

“Prominent neuroscientist and Guggenheim Fellow Charan Ranganath guides us through the science of our memories with incredible insight and clear science. He combines fascinating tales of the peculiarities of memory with practical, actionable steps. Not only will every reader remember better afterward, they’ll also never forget this life-changing book.”—Siddhartha Mukherjee, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Emperor of Maladies, and The Gene

FIGHT RIGHT: My wife, Rachel, and I have had the incredible privilege of working with John and Julie on several books—and benefiting from their marriage-saving advice personally.  Their newest book is one of their most important yet.  Fight Right: How Successful Couples Turn Conflict Into Connection reveals the five secrets they discovered in their world-famous Love Lab that separate the Masters of Love from the Disasters. John and Julie became famous for being able to tell with 90% accuracy after a fifteen-minute conflict conversation whether a couple would be divorced six years later—in short, the first fifteen minutes of a conflict not only predict the future of the argument-but also the future of the relationship. They reveal so many fascinating insights including the fact that 69% of conflicts never go away–they call these lingering clashes, “Perpetual Problems.” And John and Julie help couples learn their conflict style (gulp, discovered I was a Volatile!), revealing how all styles can succeed by learning these five important lessons.

THE LIFE BRIEF: We had the profound privilege of agenting the bestselling and defining career book of this decade, Designing Your Life, so when Bonnie Wan came to us with her laser-sharp method for getting crystal clear on your life and your passion, we knew it would be an enormously valuable support for readers navigating  life’s decisions, crossroads, and curveballs.  I have been a journaler since I was in college—and read through them all when I was on sabbatical, which was fascinating. I can’t wait to revisit these musings using Bonnie’s techniques for making meaning out of the mess. Bonnie’s book asks the right questions that will lead us to our heart’s true answers.
