Gladys McGarey

Dr. Gladys McGarey is a 101 still-practicing doctor and is internationally recognized as the Mother of Holistic Medicine. Dr. Gladys, as she is affectionately known, is a Founding Diplomate of the American Board of Holistic Medicine and has had a family practice for more than seventy years. She is the co-founder and past president of the American Holistic Medical Association, as well as the co-founder of the Academy of Parapsychology and Medicine and the founder of The International Academy of Clinical Hypnosis. 

Dr. Gladys was one of the first Western Doctors to regularly utilize acupuncture in the U.S. and has trained countless numbers of physicians. Dr. Gladys has tirelessly pioneered holistic medicine, natural birthing, and the physician-patient partnership.In addition to being the premiere pioneer of the holistic medicine movement, she also successfully advocated for fathers to be allowed in hospital delivery rooms and taught safer birthing practices to rural women in Afghanistan, resulting in a 47% decrease in infant and young child mortality. Dr. Gladys’ innovations for natural birth include the Baby Buggy Program, founded in 1978, which featured a fully equipped paramedical and emergency transport vehicle for home deliveries. 

In 1970, she co-founded the A.R.E. Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona, where she pioneered the integration of allopathic and holistic medical practices, laying the groundwork for the cultural shift that recognizes alternative and holistic medical modalities. She also co-founded The Scottsdale Holistic Medical Group. Dr. Gladys’s work is amplified and carried on by The Foundation for Living Medicine, a non-profit that works to expand the knowledge and application of holistic principles through scientific research and education. 

Dr. Gladys lives and works in Scottsdale, Arizona, where for many years she shared a medical practice with her daughter Helene Wechsler, MD. She currently has a life coaching practice, maintains a healthy diet, and enjoys a good piece of cake now and then as well.
